Theming: What’s the point?

Fluxx is a card game whose rules and victory condition change during play. Put the right Keepers in front of you when the current Goal appears.

The only stable rule

The game starts with Draw 1, Play 1. Everything else can change, including the number of cards you draw or play, what you may keep, and the way to win. Before each turn, read every face-up New Rule.

Setting up: How to get started?

Deal the game

  1. Shuffle all cards into one deck.
  2. Deal three cards to each player.
  3. Make a face-down draw pile and leave room for discards.
  4. Choose a first player by any fair method.
  5. Begin with no Keepers, no Goal, and only Draw 1, Play 1.

If the draw pile runs out, shuffle the discard pile into a new draw pile. Never shuffle cards that remain in play.

Rounds and Phases

Take a turn

  1. Draw the number of cards required by the active Draw rule.
  2. Play the number required by the active Play rule.
  3. Resolve each card immediately. A Goal or New Rule replaces the existing card of that type.
  4. After playing, obey every active Hand Limit and Keeper Limit by discarding excess cards of your choice.
  5. Check the current Goal before play passes clockwise.

What each card does

  • Keepers stay face-up in front of their owner.
  • Goals set the current win condition. With no Goal, nobody wins normally.
  • New Rules take effect immediately and can alter this turn.
  • Actions resolve once, then go to the discard pile.

If you must play more cards than you hold, play all you can. When rules conflict, the newest relevant card wins; a card’s specific instruction overrides the general rules.

Scoring

End of the game

There is no points total. The instant a player has all Keepers listed on the current Goal, that player wins, including during another player’s Action or rule change. If several players meet it at once, they all win.

Terminology

Card types and limits

  • Keeper: a card kept face-up in front of a player.

  • New Rule: a card that changes how the game is played.
  • Action: a one-off instruction, resolved and then discarded.
  • Hand Limit: maximum cards held after a turn.
  • Keeper Limit: maximum Keepers kept after a turn.
